MAKE SHIFT HAPPEN
Whatever you do, don’t build a career around being the ultimate tactician, doer, optimizer, order taker, or problem solver. All of these roles will fade in value relative to the leadership contributions you can make. Stick with them and you’ll put a lid on how far you can go and how big a difference you can make. To live up to your brand’s promise, you’ll need to get your shift together.
I’m not saying this is going to be easy. In fact, it can be far from it. Making the departure from doing to leading can be one of the toughest transitions you’ll make in your career, and after reading this chapter, your mind is likely buzzing with all there is to do. You might be sizing yourself up against accomplished confident leaders you know or read about, and you might be worrying about how you’ll ever stack up.
Please. Just. Don’t.
You’re attempting something momentous, new, and difficult, so be kind to yourself. Pick one shift to focus on—the one that makes the most sense for you right now, and concentrate on that new mindset. Catch yourself in the act of thinking the old way, and try to embrace the new way instead. When you feel ready, take a few actions to test out or reinforce the shift. Celebrate every small step as a win, and know that I’m incredibly proud of you.
